Amy Scott was ready for a normal work day. A Menomonee Falls grade school teacher, she showed up for class as usual and began interacting with her students. However, a short time later, the scene quickly changed. Her first child, who would be named Leah, had decided it was time to enter the world!
“I started having contractions, so my principal called in a substitute teacher,” Amy recalled. Her husband, Aaron, who also is a teacher, found someone to take his place, picked up Amy, and they drove to the Birthing Center at Community Memorial Hospital.
“When we showed up, we were very nervous,” Amy recalled. “But from the time we were admitted and they took us up to our room, the nurse came in and everybody was so calm and supportive. They gave us total confidence.”
The Birthing Center’s team approach is designed to create a welcoming environment that gives couples comfort and confidence that they are in the best of hands.
“I think a nice warm, comfortable environment is very important,” said Kerry Hicks, MD, Amy’s obstetrician. “The décor of the birthing suites is designed to have that nice, warm feeling and people walk in and comment, ‘Wow! It’s so nice. It looks like a hotel room. I can stay here.’ That helps tremendously when you’ve got some nervous parents.”
As Amy’s labor progressed, Aaron was happy to be there for Amy when she needed him most – at delivery time.
“I wanted to offer support and encouragement to Amy,” Aaron explained. “Giving her drinks, rubbing her back and making her as comfortable as possible. When it was actually time for Leah to arrive, I wanted to give Amy strong encouragement and just be right there, helping her.”
Expectant moms, together with their obstetrician, develop a pain management plan, which is provided to the hospital during the registration process. During labor and delivery, the nursing team implements the plan to help relax and calm expectant moms. The nurses kept Amy on track, something she really appreciated.
“They just kept offering suggestions on ways to make the pain easier to cope with,” Amy said. “Dr. Hicks and I talked about the different kinds of pain medicines and we set up our plan. The nurses followed the plan and kept offering suggestions like sitting a different way, walking, and doing all sorts of things to deal with the pain. They were very supportive.”
Leah was born without complications and this was an experience Amy and Aaron will never forget.
