Breastfeeding Basics
This class will explain breastfeeding: how your body works; newborn behavior and breastfeeding; and making your breastfeeding experience a positive one. This class may be taken early in your third trimester of pregnancy. Your support person is encouraged to attend with you. This one-session class is offered monthly in the evening.
After attending this class, participants will learn:
- Physiological changes in the breast during pregnancy and after delivery, and how the lactation process begins
- Three phases of breastmilk production and the importance of colostrum
- Infant feeding cues, feeding frequency and factors that may influence sleep/wake cycles
- Positions in which to hold a baby for breastfeeding
- Latching and how it affects milk transfer and painful nipples
- Adequate milk transfer, ways in which to improve transfer and signs that baby is receiving enough breastmilk
- Basic information about pumping and storage guidelines for breastmilk
- Resources for help with breastfeeding concerns
