In 2008, the Milwaukee Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded Community Memorial Hospital a $26,400 grant to provide mammograms to 100 uninsured women through the Community Outreach Health Clinic located in the Outpatient Care Center at Community Memorial. The clinic serves the primary outpatient medical needs of the growing number of uninsured and underinsured people in Waukesha, Washington and northern Milwaukee counties.
Komen grant recipients were announced at the May 8 Pink Is Powerful celebration to honor sponsors and volunteers whose dedication to the fight against breast cancer has resulted in raising more awareness and dollars for our community than ever before.
“It is important that every woman have an opportunity for a mammogram,” said Kerry Freiberg, executive director of Community Memorial Foundation. “This test can save so many lives. We are very grateful to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for its support in our effort to contribute to the health and quality of life of women in our community.”
To participate in the program, women must be eligible for services from the Community Outreach Health Clinic (income at 185 percent of poverty level or below, without health insurance, and not eligible for other benefit programs), must be 40-49 year old, or have physical symptoms or risk factors such as a family history of breast cancer.
