One in every eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. All women are at risk for developing the disease. Over 80 percent of women who develop breast cancer do not have significant risk factors other than being a woman and growing older.
The key to a complete recovery from breast cancer is early detection – something you can control!
For early detection of breast cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends women begin monthly self-exams by age 20. Women between the ages of 20 and 39 should ask their doctor for a clinical breast exam every three years. Women age 40 and over should ask their doctors for a clinical breast exam annually.
Clinical breast exams should be done close to the time of the mammogram. Have regular mammograms annually, starting at age 40.
If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, discuss mammography screening guidelines and scheduling with your doctor.
