Support Services for Cancer Patients

Treatment for cancer isn’t about a disease – it’s about a person. The Cancer Care Center offers an array of support options for people receiving cancer treatment.

Cancer Resource Library

The Alyce Malone Resource Library located within the Cancer Care Center provides a lending library with information on cancer, books and videos for patients and family members. Free brochures are also provided from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute. Internet access is also available in the Cancer Care Center with Web sites from respected sources.

Counseling and Emotional Support

A diagnosis of cancer can be frightening for patients and their families. Our Cancer Care Center staff can assist in finding counseling and therapy services to help people affected by cancer overcome fear and come to terms with cancer and its influence on their lives.

Educational Offerings

Education about cancer and early detection saves lives. The Cancer Care Center sponsors educational programs throughout the year to help individuals learn how to cope with a diagnosis or to lower the risk for cancer. To learn more about classes we offer, visit our calendar of events.

Our healthcare professionals are available to speak to groups on cancer-related topics such as early detection, prevention, screening, coping and the latest advances in treatment research. To contact our Speakers Bureau, call Education Services at Community Memorial Hospital at 262-257-3240.

Healing Garden

At Community Memorial Hospital, we strongly believe a hospital’s surroundings can positively affect the mood, stress-level and overall well-being of our patients and their families. In fact, clinical studies have found that viewing nature produces positive changes in a patient’s blood pressure, heart activity, muscle tension and brain activity. That’s why, with your help, we created the healing garden.

The healing garden is located on the hospital’s campus and is easily viewed and accessed from the main building and from the parking lot. The garden is home to trees, plants, flowers, sitting areas, a fountain and other naturally inspiring scenery. The healing garden provides a unique environment of beauty, silence and serenity — the kind that nurtures the body, mind and spirit. It is a place to experience the outdoors as the seasons and world change around us. It is a place to think, pray, grieve, hope, give thanks and remember.

Home Care and Hospice

The Cancer Care Center provides services through its affiliation with Horizon Home Care and Hospice, Inc. and other community agencies. Home care provides multifaceted healthcare services to individuals in their homes, with caring attention given to comfort, dignity, independence, privacy and self-esteem. The hospice program provides sensitive support for people in the final phases of a terminal illness. Hospice nurses help families manage the patient’s care so that the last days may be spent at home with comfort and dignity.

Nutrition and Diet Counseling

Registered dietitians offer nutrition advice and will help you cope with possible weight fluctuations, taste changes, loss of appetite or other eating issues that may result from cancer treatment. A dietitian is available to review your dietary needs at any time.

Pastoral Care

Cancer can affect your values, beliefs and hopes. This may be a time to reflect on them and prepare for the journey to come. A chaplain is available to assist you and your family through your journey. The hospital chaplain will also collaborate with your own pastor or religious leader who may be part of the treatment team if you wish.

Social Services

Our oncology social worker is available to assist you and your family with emotional, legal, financial, transportation and other issues related to your healthcare needs. As part of the treatment team, the social worker meets with every patient who has an identified need. Should you need immediate assistance with counseling or help locating community resources, talk to your Cancer Care Center nurses.
