The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Community Memorial Hospital provides advanced critical care nursing services to patients who are experiencing or are at risk for developing a life-threatening condition. Patients are admitted via scheduled admissions, emergency room in-house transfers, outpatient and direct admissions.
The ICU provides critical life sustaining support for the patient recovering from a life-threatening procedure or event. Patients in the ICU frequently have their breathing supported with a breathing machine (ventilator) and may have specialized equipment in place to monitor and evaluate vital body functions (EKG monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, etc.).
Using a Case Management nursing model, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certified Registered Nurses practicing as patient care coordinators and staff nurses provide the patient care. Our care delivery system incorporates collaborative practice and utilizes all disciplines to provide quality care and optimize patient outcomes. Respiratory therapists provide continued monitoring and operation of the ventilators. Staffing is monitored and adjusted every shift according to patient acuity levels.
Visitation and support for our patients by family members and significant others is an important part of the healing process. Because of this, visiting hours are dictated by patient condition. Typically one or two visitors at a time is appropriate. The length of the visit may be limited if the patient's condition calls for more rest time.
