Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy Programs

Many Physical Therapy services are provided at all of our locations. We have highly skilled, experienced staff to take care of all of your needs. Some diagnoses / conditions, however, are unique and benefit from a particular treatment environment and / or specially trained staff.

Adult Fitness Exercise Program

This fee-for-service program includes five one-hour personal training sessions over the course of three months. A licensed athletic trainer designs an exercise/fitness program to meet the specific goals of the client. Various forms of exercise are incorporated based on the client’s interests and access to equipment / facilities. Also included is the use of the Sports Center’s fitness facilities for the duration of the program. Available at the Germantown and Menomonee Falls Sports Centers.

Aquatic Therapy

Exercise-based therapy in the warm-water therapy pool. Warmth, compression and the elimination of gravity assist with gaining motion, strength and function. The program is combined with traditional land-based treatment. Available at the Menomonee Falls Sports Center.

Post-Surgical Bariatric Functional Rehabilitation Program

Through this program, clients are educated on the physical ramifications to their bodies and function following bariatric surgery. Instruction and support for exercise are designed specifically to improve the success of the surgery / weight loss and maximize the client’s fitness within their new body. The service is available whether they have the surgery at CMH or not. Available at the Menomonee Falls Sports Center.

Post-Surgical Breast Cancer / Node Dissection / Reconstruction Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy is available to assist patients toward full functional recovery and use of their affected arm through therapeutic exercise, progressive home exercise instruction and scar / soft tissue mobilization. Available at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.

Outpatient Cardiac Physical Therapy Program

An individualized outpatient treatment program designed to restore functional strength after a significant cardiac event. Patients enter the program after completion of traditional monitored Cardiac Rehab program. This program ranges from a 2-3 visit home exercise program instruction to a 4-6 week intensive program, based on the patient’s entry status and goals. Available at the Menomonee Falls Sports Center.

Diabetes and Exercise Program

Education and instruction on incorporating exercise into a long-term management plan for the diabetic patient. The program includes three sessions and is self-pay. Insurance does not typically cover this service. Available at the Menomonee Falls Sports Center.

Lymphedema Program

A specially trained occupational or physical therapist will evaluate and design an individualized treatment plan to address the patient’s needs related to their specific lymphedema issues (primary or secondary lymphedema, arm(s)/leg(s)/trunk or other body part involvement). Services include skilled Manual Lymphatic Decongestion (MLD), medical compression bandaging, scar tissue management and recommendation for compression garment fitting. Patients will be taught exercises for improving range of motion and strength, skin care strategies to prevent infections, self-massage, self-bandaging and self-management home programs. Multiple Sclerosis Evaluation / Treatment

A full evaluation looks at flexibility, strength and gait analysis. Suggestions are made regarding safety, appropriate assistive devices and home exercises. Available at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.

Multiservice Patients

Patients who require a combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy are seen at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department. Patients in this category may include patients with stroke, head injury, neurological disease or multiple trauma. Patients can also include those recently discharged from the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, a sub-acute facility or home physical therapy program. Available at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.

Biomechanical Foot Analysis & Orthotics Fabrication

A staff member will assess the anatomy and function of individuals with foot pain / problems and provide appropriate rehabilitation and exercise instruction. When appropriate, they will also assess for and fabricate custom foot orthotics to improve foot/ankle mechanics, decrease pain and assist in functional improvement. Available at the Menomonee Falls Sports Center.

Osteoporosis

Physical therapy protocols have been developed to manage patients with all stages of osteoporosis including patients with post-fracture issues. A physical therapist evaluates the patient and develops an individualized plan related to posture correction / awareness, safe strengthening exercises, weight bearing activities and proper body mechanics / spine protection. Functional mobility, gait training and pain management are also addressed as needed following a fracture. Available at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.

Pelvic Pain Rehabilitation

Services for the patient with pelvic pain or pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, are provided by specially-trained physical therapists. Physical therapy treatment may include manual therapy, home exercise instruction, postural body mechanics education and use of pain-relieving modalities as appropriate. Pregnancy-Related Musculoskeletal Issues

Services include assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal imbalances created by increased joint laxity, adaptive soft tissues shortening or stretch weakness during pregnancy or the postpartum period. Physical therapy treatment is specifically adapted to this specialty population and may include manual therapy, home exercise instruction, education on proper postural body mechanics, alternative positions for labor and delivery to decrease symptoms, guidelines for safe exercise, use of supportive corsets to maintain pelvic alignment and improve stability. Recommendations for the use of TENS during labor for pain control is also available. Available at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.

Prenatal Exercise Class: Toning for Two

Toning for Two is a fun, six-week, low-impact aerobics class instructed by a licensed physical therapist or physical therapy assistant. This fee-for-service class includes low-impact aerobic strengthening and flexibility exercises, instruction in proper body mechanics, musculoskeletal changes during pregnancy and pelvic floor education. Participants must have a physician’s consent and are registered through Careconnection at Community Memorial. There is a fee for this class. Available at the hospital.

Running Analysis

Biomechanical analysis of foot, ankle, knee and hip while walking and running to identify dysfunction and areas of injury or injury potential. Videotaping of session is performed for visual feedback and discussion. Education provided to address mechanical changes, footwear and strengthening exercises to improve function. Available at the Germantown Sports Center.

Spine Management Services

While all of our physical therapy staff effectively treat spinal patients, our Menomonee Falls Sports Care Center houses our comprehensive spine program. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, vocational counseling, pain management and work hardening are centrally located and provided in a collaborative effort with the physician / medical team.

Temporomandibular (TMJ) Dysfunction Treatment

A therapist with special training provides treatment for patients with temporomandibular joint or jaw pain and dysfunction including disk issues, inflammation, hypermobility, hypomobility and/or status post surgery. Headache or neck pain and jaw clicking are also frequent complaints for this population. Physical therapy focuses on evaluation of TMJ range of motion, joint mechanics and muscle function, as well as other possible contributing factors, including cervical spine dysfunction, postural issues, stress issues and teeth grinding. Treatment may include modalities and manual therapy to increase motion and decrease pain in TMJ and/or cervical spine, home program instruction and education on posture, body mechanics and joint protection. Vestibular (Dizziness / Imbalance) Rehabilitation

Physical therapists work with both central and peripheral vestibular problems, assessing and educating patients on the underlying cause of dizziness / imbalance. Instruction is provided in appropriate positional exercises to minimize symptoms and improve mobility. Patients with Benign Positional Vertigo respond very well to physical therapy and are able to dramatically reduce or eliminate their symptoms. Wound Care

Care is available for patients with non-healing wounds that require debridement. Services include whirlpool or pulsed lavage for wound debridement and electrical stimulation for wound healing. Available at the hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.
