Programs and Classes

Community Memorial offers a variety of programs for the elite athlete and weekend warrior - and everyone in between.

Diabetes and Exercise Program

This program involves the development of an individualized exercise program, performed by a Physical Therapist in a small group setting for people with type I or type II diabetes. The program addresses the needs of people with diabetes who are interested in a medically prescribed exercise program that highlights diabetic issues, general well-being and cardiovascular fitness.

The program consists of three visits. An initial, 60-minute visit is followed by two 30-minute visits. Participants will be instructed in a home exercise program progression that consists of flexibility, strengthening and conditioning exercises. Information about general diabetes needs when exercising and general exercise information will be covered. Participants will also be taught how to use basic household items to adapt for exercise purposes. This will allow for increased ease for the participant to follow through at home with a daily exercise program.

Participants will also need to discuss the exercise program with their doctor and obtain written doctor's orders, along with any physician precautions related to their past medical history (i.e., cardiovascular disease history).

Fee: $100 includes all three sessions and a one-month independent exercise equipment rental.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What will I need to bring to class?
A written doctor's order for the exercise class is required. Participants will need to bring their blood glucose meter to test before and after exercising and fast-acting sugar in case of hypoglycemia. Participants should also dress in comfortable clothes and footwear for exercising.

Q: What will my exercise program consist of?
Every person has different exercise needs based on level of fitness and past medical history. Although the class is presented in a small group setting, each participant will have an individualized program to meet their needs. A well-rounded exercise program consists of stretching, strengthening and conditioning exercises.

Athletic Training Event Coverage

On-location sporting event coverage by a Certified Athletic Trainer provides assessment and basic treatment for injuries.

Based on the needs of the organization, the Certified Athletic Trainer is present for all or part of the planned athletic event(s). This may be for a specific event or tournament, or on an ongoing basis for team practices. The athletic trainer assesses any injuries that occur and develops a plan of care appropriate for the injury. An assessment of the athlete's ability to return to play is also made. If more intensive medical intervention is required, our staff will assist with arranging this as possible. Our contacts with area physicians allow us to expedite making appointments with orthopedic specialists.

Organizations responsible for the health and safety of large groups of athletes involved in club or other organized sports can depend on the expertise of an athletic trainer at the event to care for injuries that may occur as a result of competition. There is a decreased risk of organizational liability by providing a higher level of care to competing athletes.

Our mobile treatment clinic can be brought to the event if it is outdoors. This provides an indoor location for treatment/rest as needed. It is also a great way of marketing the fact that your organization is providing a high level of injury care for the event.

Fees are based on the individual needs of the organization contracting for the services. Organization/clubs with limited budgets can still make use of this service. As little as one to two hours of coverage per week may be sufficient, if provided during an open practice time. Assessments of new injuries can be scheduled with the coaching staff. Athletes rehabilitating from an injury are reassessed and their programs advanced. Athletes would need to be responsible for performing most of their rehab on their own with parental/coaching assistance. You may find that the parents would be willing to increase their club dues gladly in order to provide such a service. The health and safety of their children is very important.

VO2 Max Testing

Maximal or submaximal tests are performed to assess client's maximal oxygen consumption, anaerobic threshold and corresponding heart rates. Certified athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists with degrees in exercise physiology perform the tests.

The benefits of VO2 and anaerobic threshold testing gives an accurate assessment of current endurance physical condition. Values are also used in designing a custom training program which the client can self monitor using heart rate values. These values give specific information regarding intensity training needed for optimal performance.

Maximal or submaximal VO2 testing is performed on a treadmill or bike, dependent on individual needs, to assess client's current physiological status. Clients are tested while breathing into a snorkel-type mouthpiece while nasal breathing is restricted with a pair of nose clips. Heart rate is monitored with a strap around the chest. Tests generally last from 8-15 minutes with an increasing workload until maximal or predetermined submaximal values are met. Generally, the client can plan on being in the clinic for one hour to complete set-up and cool down procedures. Clients will be given computer-generated printouts detailing oxygen consumption, heart rate, anaerobic/lactate threshold and workload. These values can then be used for specific exercise prescription and future comparison to evaluate progress with training. Tests used are similar to those performed on top professional and Olympic endurance athletes. Note: Client should be well rested before the test.

Test and data explanation alone costs $100. Test and training program design costs $150.

Risks/Complications

There are risks involved which are similar to those encountered with any vigorous athletic activity. Physician clearance for this procedure may be required, depending on the individual's past medical and exercise history.

Complications which may occur include muscular soreness similar to vigorous athletic activity.

Personal Training Services

Personal training involves a one-on-one exercise program developed to suit an individual's needs. An individualized exercise program is designed to enhance general fitness, sport-specific performance or to continue post rehabilitation treatment. The program design and implementation is based on the fitness and exercise goals of the client. It includes flexibility, strength, cardiovascular, agility and therapeutic exercises to achieve the goals established by the certified athletic trainer and client. This program is conducted on a one-on- one basis and typically meets one to three times weekly for 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. For clients who only wish to have a program designed that they will then perform on their own, this can be done as well. One or two sessions of instructions may be all that is needed to meet the client's needs.

Benefits of this service include increased fitness, sports performance and continued recovery from an injury.

The cost of the program is $40 per hour. This fee is prorated for portions of a full hour in 15 minute increments.

Staff

All staff are licensed or certified individuals with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in sports medicine or exercise physiology. All of the staff have many years of experience and have obtained advanced certifications in the area of strength and conditioning, and sports performance enhancement.

A physician's approval is needed for those individuals with more than two risk factors for cardiac disease.

Body Composition Analysis

An individual's body composition is determined through direct measurement of a skinfold thickness on several sites throughout the body. An individual seeking to find out what their percentage of lean tissue versus fat tissue is would seek this service.

The Jackson-Pollock seven site procedure will be used for both males and females. It includes measuring the skinfold thickness with Lange Skinfold Calipers at these seven sites:

Based on the measurements and other client data, a computer program determines the percent lean body mass and fat mass. The patient will have an objective number indicating body composition. This procedures lasts about 15 minutes. The fee for the program is $20.

A certified athletic trainer, exercise physiologist, or a strength and conditioning specialist will perform this procedure.

Adult Fitness

Adult fitness is a comprehensive, 12-week exercise program that is targeted towards adults of all ages who need direction in starting an exercise program. It includes flexibility, strength and cardiovascular exercises that are aimed at improving an individual's overall fitness levels. This service can be performed at the Sports Medicine facility or at an individual's desired gym. The client's interests and access to equipment outside of our facility are taken into consideration when the program is designed.

The initial evaluation and five check-up visits last approximately one hour each. Increased muscular strength increased cardiovascular efficiency, and overall improvement in general fitness are to be expected. The cost of the program is $205.

A physician's approval for those individuals with higher risk factors for cardiovascular disease or significant orthopedic problems is needed.
