At the Breast Care Center, breast health specialists offer education, screening and diagnostic mammograms, and procedures such as needle localization, stereotactic breast biopsy and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, our breast care coordinator will help guide you through the appointments you need to make and doctors you need to see. All screenings and diagnostic procedures take place in our spa-like environment, where we provide coffee, water and light snacks, TV and comfortable gowns or robes.
An important part of your experience at the Breast Care Center is the staff who treat you.
Community Memorial Hospital offers both screening and diagnostic mammograms, both of which are digital. Digital mammograms offer more clear and crisp images than traditional mammograms, which means they can potentially locate smaller indications of cancer earlier. The earlier a cancer is detected, the better a patient’s chance of being completely cured.
The American Cancer Society recommends a woman begin receiving mammograms at age 40 and continue them annually as long as she is in good health. To schedule your digital mammogram at the Women’s Health Center, call Centralized Scheduling at 414-777-1900.
Researchers have identified certain inherited genes that can increase a woman’s risk for having breast cancer. In particular, women who have more than one family member who has been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer at a young age may carry these genes. If you would like to learn more about your own genetics, tell your mammogram technologist at your appointment, and our breast care coordinator can refer you to our genetic counselor.
The Breast Cancer Support Group meets every fourth Monday of the month. Both women who are receiving treatments and breast cancer survivors meet to hear speakers and share information and support. For more information, call Julie Hembel, breast care coordinator, at 262-257-5015.
The Look Good… Feel Better program is designed for female cancer patients currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments. The class, which is offered five times a year, is taught by licensed beauty professionals and discusses skin care, nail care, hair loss options and a 12-step make-up program to help women deal with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.
Look Good…Feel Better is a free, non-medical, product-neutral program offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cosmetology Association (NCA) and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA).
